Illinois Attorney General Opinions Regarding Compatability Of Public Offices

By Kirk Allen & John Kraft

On January 23, 2022

Illinois (ECWd) –

Have you ever wondered what office is or is not compatible with your local elected officials?  The Illinois Attorney General has an Index of Opinions on compatibility of offices.  Once we received the index, we requested all the opinions listed in the index.

We encourage anyone with concerns on compatibility between different offices to review the index and then read the opinions for the office in question.  When reviewing the opinions, you will find a common theme regarding faithfulness to the office they hold.  We also believe by reading these opinions you will expand your understanding as to what determines compatibility and why the Attorney General takes the position they do.

The list is long and may not hit every office in a state with more local governments than any in the country, but it does cover the most common offices in our state.  If you come across offices that are not listed we urge you to contact your local State’s Attorney and ask them to submit a question on the compatibility to the AG Opinions Bureau.

Keep in mind, there are more recent opinions on compatibility of offices (Airport Authority Commissioner qualifications 2018) and others with statutory prohibitions not listed in the below index.

The links below represent the office and within the file, you will find multiple opinions that have been issued on the matter.

Aren’t you the former States Attorney in Madison County IL with the initials of TG? The same one who allowed that Organized Crime to happen under your watch while you went on publicly funded fishing expositions and turned a blind eye to the actual corrupt acts that of all your friends were committing holding offices that conflict with each other.
