Lincoln-Way School District 210- From drips to drops

By Kirk Allen & John Kraft

On December 24, 2015

Will Co. (ECWd) –
From millions of gallons of purified water running from a cracked line costing the taxpayers thousands, to drops of water from the heavens above, as in rain drops that will once again, cost the taxpayers thousands. (See previous articles exposing District 210 malfeasance here, here, and here.)
It is becoming ever so clear the people running District 210 are out of touch with reality and need to be removed from office ASAP.
A decision was made to close a state of the art new school that opened in 2008, which many have rightfully questioned.  Why close a new state of the art facility instead of the oldest school in the district that is in need of serious upgrading, assuming any even need closed?
If there is any doubt of the lack of planning and vision with those in charge at District 210, let the pictures tell the story!
With leaks like those shown in these photos, most would agree they have a serious roofing problem that may well turn to a mold issue if not addressed quickly, which will cost more money.  Never mind the hazards created with wet floors and potential personal injury liability.
If you live in District 210 my only advise at this time is to demand resignations of those responsible and replace them with qualified intelligent people from your community.

As an alumni (LWC 1986) I am disappointed but not surprised to hear of the problems with the state of the district. If North is closing, Central should be the focus of an extensive modernization project. As for the roof leaks specifically, please fix them before the moisture reaches my all-conference soccer picture and those of my fellow athletes.

Working in the construction field I can tell you that mold is nothing that contractors deal with lightly …working on high rises, as the building goes up, every 5 floors or so a temporary roof would be installed keeping water from running down floor to floor… this prevents rain water from reaching floors that the interior work has begun …if this did happen …no chances were taken… all flooring was thrown out, drywall was cut out in affected areas where the water ran down the walls .. 4 feet from the floor up was cut out..all insulation was thrown out from floor to ceiling in case it absorbed water …mold attaches to everything and if not taken care of properly spreads fast….it just started to rain… at central the towels ,slippery when wet signs, and garbage cans are being dragged out…again …going to be a long, wet weekend there

A picture does speak a thousand words obviously. Hard to argue against pictures you can see for yourself. This is more than a simple roof leak, it’s a complete roof failure evidently based on the pictures. Black mold should be tested for now within the structure obviously, that’s a major lawsuit and health risk, and deadly potentially to anyone exposed to black mold. Those responsible should be held accountable for the damages done to these victims. Someone should file a lawsuit against those responsible. Hit them where it matters most to them… in their wallets! Merry ChrisTmas and Happy New Year.

I live in the community and have been to meetings.. when you say talk to people in charge..to me this means- 1 person talks and then another responds…this is not what goes on.. The numerous people that see wrong doing talk and the board members(the ones you seem to want to defend) sit on stage looking at the table and their phones waiting for the general public time slot to end…then go back to finding ways to hide and make excuses for people and past decisions that have put this district in the spot it is in now

Mold is a HUGE issue…when you have a leak and mold starts it spreads and it speads fast.. the cost of removing mold and rebuilding is $$$ cost of a new roof $$$$ .. How long has the roof been leaking? The money that flowed down the drain that no one saw would come in handy right about now…instead of mothballing north maybe closing the 60 yr old moldball central would be a better option ..if you have to close one at all

    Kirk:
Your article is just a reach. So the roof leaked as over 1″ of rain fell in under 45min. I’m sure the previous and current board was smart enough to have insurance in place for matters like this. Report on the facts, not on uncontrollable incidents caused by extreme weather and try and link them to mismanagement. This doesn’t help to truly expose what is going on.

Jake, not sure of your background but any roofer will tell you it should be able to handle 1″ of rain in 45 minutes. You say report on facts. What was reported that was not a fact. Word has it this roof has had problems for some time and failure to address it is in fact mismanagement.

Looks like my old house that the building and trades program built that Ron Sawin sold my family @ 8844 Port Washington in Frankfort. The home probably still floods! Keep up the good work exposing these crooks and frauds…

Whose going to want to serve when your attacking families of people who volunteer their time. Look at Salaried people before you jump on a board of volunteers. You don’t even live in our community and you don’t even talk to the people in charge. This isn’t journalism, this is someone commenting on a picture of a wall. Why don’t you do your research and do an exposé about what happened fifteen years ago with wage and pension inflation that is the real reason the district is in financial hurt and not go after the people who are trying to clean up after the housing market bust and pension mismanagement. The current board had no control over what the previous generation created. New board members have no power to do more until a 5.5 million dollar budget gap is closed. Closing a school of 2500 versus 3800 was a tough call, but the smaller school was closed in the hopes of leasing it out and still keeping schools from overcrowding. Actually do your research on court documents and public records before you come to bogus conjectures about towns you have no vesting interest in.

Ed, you too have fallen into the mythological hole that exposure of malfeasance will stop people from serving. History of our work has proven just the opposite. You also fail to understand you dont have to live in your district to be impacted by the mismanagement. How many local business’s are impacted that do business state wide, thus impacting others?
If your position is that only people living in the district can report on anything you would have little to no coverage of all the problems that district is facing.
The housing market bust had nothing to do with the mismanagement you are facing. The property tax on homes was still collected, regardless of the housing market.
Why dont you look at the special legislation passed for D210 that allowed you to go into even further debt, beyond the mandated debt to EAV limit? That should have been the first red flag back in 1994.
Closed in hopes of leasing it out? Please show me where you have the authority to lease out a school. And if you can find that, when was the BOE going to tell the public that was their plan? As we understand it, it was to be mothballed.
And as far as our looking at court records and doing more research, why dont you tell the good people here how much research I have already done?
Interesting you have no comments for the first three fact based articles?

Mr. Krieger I’m sorry but you are in denial of reality…Ron Sawin is not a volunteer and he has had his mits in the $$$ the entire time! Our community ‘s tax dollars have been squandered and thus will continue until we get some new honest people in there running things!

I responding to the previous articles attacking the board president which is an elected unpaid volunteer position.

Okay so all this information is now public. There have been tons of FOIA requests, tons of documents made public. What is the next step? How do we get the train back on the track? Most of this info has been brought to the boards attention, the superintendents attenetion and seems to have fallen on deaf ears. Retired school superintendents, former school board members, accountants, various community members, etc. have offered to help and have been turned down. What happened to the forensic audit? The Will County Regional Board of Education and local politicians all say it is a LOCAL problem and they can’t/won’t help or offer any solutions? Do the taxpayers just bend over once again and watch a school get shut down? Do we sit back and watch our property values plummet? What do we do? Where do we go from here? All this bickering between residents is not solving anything.

            Great question Norman.
The key to fixing any problem is first exposing it and determining who was responsible. Once that is known the public must continue to attend meetings and demand accountability. Continually expose the bad actors on every social media you can which will lead to them either fixing it or resigning.
In addition, you MUST seek out good people to run for office that are not afraid of being bullied by the Administration. They have long forgotten they work for the BOE, not the other way around.
Court action is another method. Judicial review on illegal actions can be reversed.
I suspect court action is the only thing at this time that is going to fix anything.
