Will Co. (ECWd) -
We have confirmed the criminal investigation of Bill Mayer, former DuPage Township Supervisor, was being handled by the Bolingbrook Police Department, however, it was turned over to the FBI in late June of this year.
"I am no longer working the Township case. Everything was handed over to the FBI. If more information comes in, can you please forward it to them."
While those not familiar with the backside of the criminal complaint and investigation, they will assume from the email that since it does not say Bill Mayer or even mention DuPage Township our reporting is false. Such an assumption would be wrong as we make this claim because we know who filed the official complaint against Mayer which included a lot of the evidence we had compiled and that person has shared the communication with us and confirmed the case was turned over to the FBI. Key parts of the email have been redacted in order to protect the witness.
This fact is significant as many of the defenders of Mayer have insisted he did nothing wrong. Mayer's past practices ranging from illegal personal loans, unauthorized health insurance for himself, self-admitted conflicts of interest, and a clear abuse of General Assistance funds have been well documented in numerous articles. If there was nothing done wrong there would be no need for the local PD to turn over the investigation to the FBI. We suspect as the local investigation began confirming key facts they realized the Federal ramifications of their findings, thus better for the FBI to handle the matter.
Considering the Federal authorities never disclose the status of an investigation we are unable to report anything further. However just the fact the local police felt the evidence provided was sufficient to turn the matter over the FBI appears to validate what Township Trustee Benford had been saying all along regarding Mayer's spending habits, admitted conflicts of interest, and a clear abuse of taxpayer funds.
