Anyone who’s ever had to eat a serving of crow would recognize how overly harsh it was for a member to go on record claiming the self-proclaimed county farm advocate lied. Careless or haphazard, yes. If you’ve never had to eat a little crow, you’ll either have no gray-haired wisdom or are living overly averse to any and all forms of risk.
But from here, it sure is frustrating to listen to a public commenter make baseless accusations towards the treasurer in sequence with malicious inuendo about who’s liable for the property taxes. I think the farm committee chair and self-proclaimed advocate for the county farm could do a world of good by first understanding her deep connection to the county farm with respect the laws that have both historically and presently sought to govern that land, and then take that newfound expertise to educate members of the board, community and public body. While the willfully ignorant may be a lost cause, there’s bound to be a few many there in Shelby County that can still benefit from that sort of advocacy.
Kudos to the gentleman who rose to speak for the minority. Courage is as courage does. I’ll venture a guess that most of the people who spoke in anger at Monday’s farm committee meeting together with the somewhat more restrained speakers at this full county board meeting have no interest in considering how the ECWd’s persistent light in Shelby County has benefited their county and/or the state of Illinois. A certain attitude among many of these extraordinarily narrow-minded speakers is reflected in ‘administrative’ privilege of the Shelby County First Facebook page.
Holding a right to speak while exercising a right not to speak is far better than not showing up at all.
