A Nason City Council meeting took a dramatic and chaotic turn Thursday evening (May 1, 2025), marked by resignations, public outbursts, and ultimately, the arrest of a sitting alderman. The meeting, which had resumed following an executive session, quickly devolved after the announcement of several resignations.
.
The announcement that the Nason City Attorney from Olson and Reeves would be stepping down, followed by the resignation of Ms. Donna Vancil from her post weeks before the incoming city clerk newly elected Mayor and alderman is set to take office, drew a reaction from a citizen in attendance. An audible applause from the citizen prompted Mayor McKinney to admonish the individual, reminding them that it was a public meeting and decorum was expected.
.
Undeterred, the citizen retorted that it was the Mayor’s last meeting and urged the continuation of the resignation announcements, Mayor McKinney clarified that she herself was not resigning. The citizen then responded, stating they did not anticipate her resignation as she had already been voted out of office.
.
Following the tense exchange, the resignation announcements concluded, and Mayor McKinney abruptly adjourned the meeting without a motion from the council, a procedural irregularity that has been noted in previous meetings.
.
The turmoil did not end with the adjournment. As citizens exited the building, a physical altercation reportedly broke out between incoming Alderman Alan Colle and current Alderman David Page. Sources indicate that Mr. Page allegedly assaulted Mr. Colle for filming the public meeting after it had concluded – an act constitutionally protected under the First Amendment.
.
Sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene by Mr. Colle. According to witnesses, Mr. Page initially found the situation amusing until law enforcement arrived with a transport vehicle. Alderman David Page was subsequently arrested and taken into custody on unknown charges.
.
This tumultuous meeting underscores a period of significant upheaval within the Nason city government, just weeks before a new city clerk is slated to take office. The resignations, coupled with the alleged assault and arrest of a sitting alderman, paint a picture of deep-seated tensions within the local political landscape.
.
Southern Illinois Watchdogs will continue to monitor this developing story in Nason and provide updates as more information becomes available. Stay tuned for further details on the resignations, the upcoming transition in the city clerk’s office, and the legal proceedings following Alderman Page’s arrest.
