DuPage Township, Ill. (ECWd) –

DuPage Township (Will County) owns and maintains two cemeteries, Alexander in Romeoville, and Boardman in Bolingbrook.

The DuPage Township democrats have placed (or permitted one to remain) a campaign sign on the iron fence of Alexander Cemetery. The sign was recently updated to change the first name of the Supervisor Candidate.

Signs like these placed on public property violate the State Officials and Employees Ethics Act, which all local governments must comply with, and also violate Article VIII, Section 1, of the Illinois Constitution (unlawful use of public property) if they were placed there by a public official or an employee of the township, or if the signs were permitted to remain on public property by those same people.

The Ethics Act defines “prohibited political activities” prohibits their activities in Section 5-15, which local governments are required to adopt:

  • State employees shall not intentionally misappropriate any State property or resources by engaging in any prohibited political activity for the benefit of any campaign for elective office or any political organization
