ILLINOIS (ECWd) –
With the sudden interest in the Federal government’s payments to POLITICO subscriptions, we decided to update an article from several years ago on the public monies paid to Capitol Fax and POLITICO from the State of Illinois.
According to an Open The Books database search, Illinois taxpayers were on the hook for the following subscriptions:
- 2023 payments to “Ahead of Our Time Publishing” (aka Capitol Fax) for $38,416.66
- 2022 payments to “Ahead of Our Time Publishing” (aka Capitol Fax) for $38,755.61
- 2023 payments to “Politico” for $14,066.00
- 2022 payments to “Politico” for $11,435.00
- See the spreadsheets here and here.
This totals $102,673.27 during 2022 and 2023. We do not have the numbers for 2024 yet.
Once again, we do not fault any news agency or blogger, or anyone else for making a living, but we do fault state and local governments for spending tax money on these types of subscriptions as there does not appear to be any statute providing our state government to spend money in this fashion.

Posted at 09:27h, 10 FebruaryCap Facts has been liberal since its inception. The organization is also pro Democratic in its views. I guess we know why now;bought and paid for.. I wonder how Pritzker would like Open the Books to do an independent audit of state expenditures for the past four years? Forget Pritzker, the general public would applaud an independent audit.
