Atlanta, IL. City Council Meeting Live Stream –

By John Kraft & Kirk Allen

On July 3, 2024

Atlanta, Ill. (ECWd) –

We attended and live streamed the Atlanta, Illinois City Council meeting last night because we understood there was a meeting held in June, allegedly without a quorum, and a council member was appointed to fill a vacancy on the board during that meeting.

His appointment was “ratified” at this meeting.

We sent some requests for public records to the city in the past couple of months, and shortly thereafter board member Chris Thomas resigned from office.

At the 20:20 mark in the video below, an employee spoke to the board about allegations made during council meetings and elsewhere.

It is worth listening to.

We have an ordinance that states “The Mayor shall be ex-officio member of all committees.” but our attorney has stated that the mayor does not count towards the quorum. (If I recall the attorney did reference ILCS law)

That being said it would only make sense that the quorum be established based upon the number of members not seats. If there happen to be 3 vacancies, then no replacements could be appointed.

Municipal Code provides for an appointment process if there is not a quorum left in office.

This has to be illegal as hell. If it was legal like the attorney here says then why do it all again? That doesn’t make sense and means the attorney does not even believe what he said. The mayor staring down the council member he knew he could bully into a second for the motion shows how corrupt his is.

The corruption in this town looks like it is out of control. Good for the guy to have the balls to stand up to the mayor. Is this not the town that you guys investigated a few years back where the guy tried to screw the library?
