PARIS, IL. (ECWd) –

There have been recent reports about the possibility of the Edgar County Jail closing, but the immediate reason has not been publicly stated…yet.

Illinois Counties Risk Management Trust, Insurance Program Managers Group, declines coverage according to their letter mailed to the county over a month ago.

The letter sent August 23, 2019, states that effective December 1, 2019, the insurance company has a material change in coverage.  Specificaly, “the premises and operations at the Edgar County Jail, located at 228 North Central, Paris, Illinois, is excluded for General Liability, Law Enforcement Liability, Property and Inland Marine Coverage”

We have been informed by a County official that the insurance coverage has been, or will be, amended to provide insurance coverage for 911 (ETSB) and the Sheriff’s Office so that they can still work in the building effected.  Basically, coverage will include everything except housing prisoners to continue working from the building after the effective date of the insurance exemptions.

The County is working with the current insurance company for the ability to house prisoners temporarily while waiting for Court times, but not overnight.

The County is exploring other insurance companies for coverage.

They’re looking for other insurance companies? I understand doing so, but what were the stated reasons for the liability coverage termination, and what is the county doing to either remedy those deficiencies – or explore new building options? I also understand the jail is OLD and it’s expensive to maintain, but what are there other options on the table? Does the Paris businessman still want the property and have an offer on the table?
