College of DuPage (ECWd) –

The College of DuPage held its regular Board of Trustees meeting tonight, and a quorum was present.

All trustees are present!

One of the first items on the agenda was swearing in the ICCB’s choice to replace former trustee Hamilton – David Olsen.

Trustee Wozniak attempted to comment prior to the oath of office and was rightfully denied by Chairman Mazzochi.

Video of swearing David Olsen’s Oath of Office and his statement to the public below:

Finally! A path forward appears possible.

Less drama. But Trustee McGuire still objects to the search consultant and financial reports. Trustee Olsen threw her a bone in suggesting he to would like to review the contract with the search consultant. Chair of the search committee Lee Daniels gave a good summary of status and expertly parried McGuire attacks.

Public comment include several students seeking free speech only to learn at the meeting the President Collins had recently approved a free speech policy. Shocking to me at least that the College can even have a policy, other than the First Amendment. Perhaps the COD policy itself is unconstitutional.

    Free Speech

First Amendment freedoms are most in danger when the government seeks to control thought or to justify its laws for that impermissible end. The right to think is the beginning of freedom, and speech must be protected from the government because speech is the beginning of thought.”—Supreme Court Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, writing for the majority, Ashcroft V. Free Speech Coalition (00-795) 198 F.3d 1083, affirmed.

At the College of DuPage, “the (most local) government” (elected by the voters of District 502) is the Board of Trustees.

The Board of Trustees should examine themselves to determine why the College of DuPage exists. Is it not to train young minds to learn how, not what, to think? Justice Kennedy has opined that “The right to think is the beginning of freedom…”

Acting President Collins has demonstrated during the last several meetings a rather vulgar hostility and disrespect to the general and particular authority of the Boad of Trustees and Chairman Mazzochi.

As a first matter at the next meeting, the Board of Trustees needs to articulate exactly what, the Board of Trustees policy is, if any, with respect to Free Speech.

So COD is actually a different country? Freedom of speech by students will now be tolerated? Are you going to test it out dr. c. and see how it goes? If the Breuder bunch and the SMT at this institution were judged according to the list of Students Rights and Responsibilities they would all have been gone a long time ago. Double standard, intimidation bs, for sure. Outrageous.
