Correction on Commissioner Kuehnel’s perks story –

By John Kraft & Kirk Allen

On July 28, 2015

Clark Co., IL. (ECWd) –

This article serves to correct misinformation in the previous article entitled: “Commissioner Kuehnel received illegal perks from Park District” (click here).

I am currently in possession of proof that Commissioner Kuehnel did pay for his boat pass, and he paid for it with a credit card on May 23, 2014.

The “fault”, if any, of the belief that he received the boat pass without paying for it lays squarely on the Executive Director and her FOIA officer.

I requested information related to Commissioners and their dock leases, boat passes, and other items.

What I received from the Park District did not include any payments for a boat pass for Commissioner Kuehnel, and in fact, included the statement that no payment was due, indicating it was because he was a Commissioner. The District did not produce any other information of any kind that indicated a payment of any kind for the boat pass.

So, although this is a correction to a previous article, it is not an admission of reporting false information as we relied on public records received thru the Freedom Of Information Act.

This should be a lesson to FOIA Officers everywhere…provide incomplete information and it might come back to bite you.

Is there ever any kind of an audit done on the Park finances? Apparently their bookkeeping skills leave a lot to be desired, so who knows what is actually going towards the Park upkeep etc. I would think the citizens of the Park district would be wanting some type of audit done so that the finances are up to date …. might make responding to FOIA requests easier to handle if they actually had the bookwork and paperwork in some type of order. And it would make the responses they give regarding their public records correct. What a novel idea!!! Respond to FOIA requests promptly and with the correct information!!

Like other places we have encountered, they try to hide any incriminating or embarrassing information. But then, it is difficult for them to say we have the wrong information when we get it directly from them.
