Kankakee, Ill. (ECWd) –
During the July 2026 board meeting of Kankakee School District 111, board member Kathy Yancy-Smith was one of the votes to permit the school superintendent to continue living outside the district and then voted to extend the superintendent’s contract with a pay raise.
The residency question only passed by 1 vote.
The next meeting held in August of 2026, Yancy-Smith obtained a financial windfall of $6,515.00, paid on the backs of the taxpayers, for failing to timely file her own Statement of Economic Interest, even though she had several warnings and notices of delinquent filing.
It begs the obvious question: Was the payment of Yancy-Smith’s personal fine contingent on her vote to extend the contract and permit the superintendent to continue living outside the district?
