Edgar Co. (ECWd) –

UPDATE 7-30-2022: A GoFundMe page has been setup asking for assistance for the medical bills of the motorcycle riders: (CLICK HERE to donate)

From a Paris Police Department release:

At approximately 12:47 p.m. on July 25, 2022, Paris Police, Paris Fire, Edgar County Sheriff’s Department, and Horizon Health Ambulance were dispatched to a 3-vehicle accident on Route 1.

A vehicle driven by Aulden Boyd of Marshall, Illinois was stopped at the intersection of Route 1 and Gibson Drive in a 2020 Ford Fusion when he pulled onto Route 1 to make a left-hand turn to go north. He failed to yield to oncoming traffic and pulled directly into the path of two Harley Davidson motorcycles.

The motorcycles and riders were identified as a 2001 Harley Davidson driven by Charla Messenger and a 2003 Harley Davidson driven by Steven Messenger.

The Messengers had been southbound when Boyd pulled into their path. The skid marks indicated they locked their brakes before striking the driver’s side of the Ford. They were both transported to Horizon Health.

Boyd was cited and arrested for “Failure to Yield” at a Stop Intersection. He was released on a Notice to Appear.

Our prayers are with the victims and their families.

WARNING: The video is unedited and shows the entire accident.

More bs from you! Where did ANYONE say ANYTHING about intentional? You really are a piece of work to not understand this at all and then make stuff up.

Cindy, so don’t do anything to improve safety, just call people names like stupid. How did you become such an expert on this?

I retired from IDOT and regardless of your thoughts, they really do care about traffic safety. Try giving them a call and discussing the location without calling them names, you will be surprised.
Ask for the facts about proper painted lanes and how it affects accident rates. Ask for the accident frequency at this location, your entitled to that information as is everyone else. Ask about motorcycle accidents across the state. Ask for help from IDOT: they can fix painted lines via the City of Paris and do more to enhance safety at this location than anyone else. Why paint them with a cynics paint brush? Why disparage the City of Paris as if they don’t care about traffic safety even before visiting with either of them?

As a former motorcyclist I understand your anger, but nothing has been said that indicates this vehicle driver intentionally caused this accident. A mistake was made, presumably by a licensed driver. Presumably with insurance. Lots of very intelligent people make mistakes. Statistics show riding a motorcycle is a high risk activity with 28 times the fatality rate of vehicle drivers and 5 times more likely to incur a serious injury in an accident per 100K miles. We should be doing all that we can to improve safety for all riders and vehicle operators and not just calling people names that can and that have devoted their lives to help preventing accidents.
My sympathies and best wishes for a speedy recovery remain with the injured.

That is a really dumb idea, Robert. You think calling the city or idot is going to solve stupidity? Where do you think stupidity starts? Have you never heard the phrase, “you can’t legislate stupidity”?

Cindy. Not making excuses for anything or anyone. Just saying the stop bar wasn’t visible in the video and that safety paint markings should be looked into by the City or IDOT. Calling the driver stupid because of an accident, when he clearly did not see the smaller vehicles on the road (motorcycles): (for what ever reason) doesn’t help much.
If you truly care about motorcycle safety and what to do something about reducing accidents then you should be calling the City or IDOT and learning what can be done to prevent the same accident from happening at this same location, again..
Consider, so far, you’ve labeled all vehicle drivers, including those that are not in accidents with motorcycles, deaf, blind, stupid and liberal. My sympathies and best wishes remain with those injured.

That’s a real liberal attitude about explaining all the shtick about improving safety. The FACT remains IT was a through street. There was a side street with a STOP sign. Does no one understand what is supposed to happen there? Stop making excuses for stupidity. It doesn’t help. Basic common sense is at fault NOT whoever made a study on proper markings.

Traffic safety engineers believe painted lines at intersections and in traffic lanes help motorists avoid accidents. Safety data at intersections where turn lanes, stop bars and lane dividers are well marked show this to be true. These are not decorative marks, they have a proven purpose and are effective at improving safety. As already noted, they do not stop drivers from making mistakes.
In my opinion, and apparently others, there is no doubt this vehicle was improperly positioned and thereby could not have observed southbound traffic until well after committing to the turn. Could the SB turning lane have added confusion?. Had a stop bar suggested to the driver where they should have initially stopped his vehicle, it might have helped prevent this accident..
Drivers mistakenly pull out in front of vehicles much larger than motorcycles every day. Sometimes its cars, sometimes it’s semi trucks. Motorcycles are much smaller and more difficult to notice than both. And the facts are, it doesn’t much matter what you’re driving when your in an accident, there are likely to be injuries.
This was an accident. Ask yourself, why would a driver pull out in front of motorcycles or any other vehicle on purpose? Had the impact been on the drivers door, it could have been far worse and is often a fatality.. Accidents are sad events. My hopes are, the motorcyclists recover well and soon..

That was the most awful accident I’ve ever seen the riders did nothing wrong my prayers go with them. The car pulled out in front of them didn’t even attempt to swerve or brake from my point of view. He should Not be able to drive ever! I also agree with jail time and if (God Forbid)! They would have passed on from the injuries he should get vehicular manslaughter my opinion May God Heal them quickly and Completely Amen

Shame on you, Sheryl. This needs to go viral. Thank you Edgar County for posting this. For way too long drivers have been deaf and blind to bikers. The person that caused this should never be able to drive again. They are a danger to everyone.

I’m lucky that I’m alive. Exactly the same situation for me. Standard explanation, “I didn’t see him”. That means they didn’t look.

Shame on you for showing this. Especially because of the victims families. I know there are more things you can report on, like the good job you’re doing on Shelbyville.

I don’t feel as if a painted or non painted line on the pavement contributed to this accident. The. drivers view was obstructed from the turning truck. He, the driver of the car, failed to wait to see if traffic was clear. People need to slow down and pay closer attention to the road. My prayers to all involved.

Thanks for posting the story and video. My son and I both ride, and I try to communicate to him as often as possible that this kind of risk is EVERYWHERE, especially now with phone distracted drivers. This kind of video shows just how fast it happens.. Hopefully many other people will learn from the rider’s unfortunate experience. My prayers go out to all involved.

I think there should be flashing yellow lights for traffic north and south bound and I think there should be a red flashing light for traffic from factories. I also think that there should be a truck entrance of it’s own.

I noticed the stop bar painted on the east bound to south bound traffic lane leaving GIbson drive but did not notice the stop bar for traffic traveling east bound on GIbson to north bound Illinois Route One.
I appears the vehicle driver’s view could have been blocked by the 18 wheeler, because of his improper vehicle position when he committed to move into the Route One south bund traffic lanes. Perhaps he was confused on where his vehicle should be because there was no visible stop bar. Sadly he also appears to have failed to verify there was no south bound traffic.
The faded or missing stop bar appears to have contributed to this accident. IDOT and the City of Paris should look into the proper paint “striping” for this intersection and verify it is correct and visible.

Throughout my 60 years of driving I have NEVER seen a “STOP BAR” STOP a vehicle!
The dash cam CLEARLY indicates his vision was BLOCKED. He should have never pulled out till the semi was clear.

Im sorry but that driver of that fusion needs to go to jail for 6 months and if someone dies, they need to go to jail for vehicular manslaughter. I ride and I can tell you this that car could not see past that semi trying to turn and pulled out anyway. At the very least that is reckless driving, and they should never get a drivers license again.
