Sauk Village, Ill. (ECWd) –
During the November 4, 2025, Sauk Village Committee of the Whole Meeting, Mayor Marva Campbell-Pruitt told a resident that she could not mention village trustees by name during public comment.
When the speaker continued using the names of the trustees, the mayor proceeded to the back of the room to turn the microphone off and then took the microphone from the lectern.
She even attempted to get the police chief to remove the speaker from the meeting.
This type of shameful and childish behavior by the mayor violates the speaker’s and the public’s First Amendment rights, and violates the Open Meetings Act, Section 2.06(g) – Right To Speak, which states:
Notice it says public official”s” – plural – and it has already been well-established that the public has a right to mention the names of their public officials, and even public employees, during public comment if they choose to do so.
