Paris, Ill. (ECWd) –
There has been considerable online chatter about the Paris (Crestwood) Community Unit School District #4 elections this spring, with people opining that there is something wrong with the ballot, but the problem is those people do not understand the election code and the county clerk’s duties in relation to the election code.
Here is the truthful situation:
- There are three of the 4-year (full term) seats open for election
- There is one open seat for an “unexpired 2-year ” seat open for election
- ALL of the candidates for school board filed their petitions for the 4-year full term open seats
- NONE of the candidates filed any petitions for the unexpired 2-year seat
- As a result, all candidates were slotted under the four-year spots on the ballot (as they should have been), with the public instructed to vote for no more than three
- The 2-year remainder open seat has no candidate (as it should not have since no petition sheets were filed for it)
VOTE FOR NO MORE THAN THREE CANDIDATES!
Since there were no petitions filed for the unexpired 2-year term, that vacant position will be appointed by the board at a public meeting after the newly elected 4-year term winners take office.
Nothing nefarious is going on – it is as it should be, compliant with state election law.
