Jerseyville, Ill. (ECWd) –

Jersey County Treasurer Katie Abbey has been under investigation by the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Unit since at least October of 2024, after allegations surfaced of her misappropriation of public funds.

The criminal investigation is still ongoing at this time.

This is according to a statement read during the January 14, 2025, Jersey County Board meeting:

In late summer of 2024, the Jersey County Sheriff received allegations that the Jersey County Treasurer was misappropriating public funds.  Due to obvious conflicts, an outside law enforcement agency and forensic examiner were brought in to investigate.  A criminal investigation is ongoing at this time.

As with any ongoing investigation, confidentiality is critical and often required by law to ensure the integrity of the investigation and evidence collected.  All of us understand the importance of transparency in government, but we are respectfully asking the public to be patient and respect the investigative and judicial process in this matter.  When appropriate to do so, additional information will be made public.

After this came to light, the county treasurer took a “personal leave of absence” and has not been working since shortly after October 15, 2024.

She is the elected treasurer and to our knowledge is still receiving her monthly paycheck while not working as a normal treasurer would be.

No arrests have been made, and these are simply allegations being investigated at this point in time.
