McHenry County, Ill. (ECWd) –

Attorney Charles A. Dunlop was on a Zoom court hearing today, dealing with a divorce case.

According to sources on the Zoom schedule, when a Motion did not go the way he intended, he yelled (or said), “f*ck . . . f*ck you” to the Judge.

The Judge then ordered him to immediately appear in person, and when he appeared, Dunlop told the Judge the words were meant for his employee, but the Judge found him in contempt of court and sentenced him to 24 hours in the McHenry County Jail, to start immediately.

He was taken into custody at 9:15 a.m. today.

He is currently listed on the McHenry County Sherrif’s inmate search with a projected release date of tomorrow, June 22, 2024.

There’s a time and place for everything. In this case, the court is a poor choice to utter “f**k you” due to the courts ability to contempt an individual. The courts have a higher esteem simply due to them being the last stop to interpret and enforce the laws. Almost all other places it would be “legal” to utter that phrase under the 1st amendment. Federal law has established saying “f**k you” to the police is completely legal. See Thurairajah v. City of Fort Smith, 925 F.3d 979 (8th Cir. 2019).
