Shelby Co. (ECWd)-
We first covered Rose Township in this article after being provided a tip that a county board member was also a Township Cemetery Board member, which is not permitted by law. Upon looking into the matter further, we published this article enlightening the public and other townships as to what the law says about appointments to a cemetery board and hiring of legal counsel.
As a follow-up to this article, we asked for minutes from the last three years for the cemetery board.
Turns out, the Rose Township Cemetery Board does not have any agendas or meeting minutes for the last 3 years.
How is it that a public body that is required by law to meet and select a president and clerk has no record of any agendas or meetings in the last three years?
As we shared in the article linked above, funds were being paid in both 2022 and 2023 to members of the Rose Township Cemetery Board.
What are they being paid for? If they are actually doing what is spelled out in the law they would have to have meetings to discuss and vote on matters. With no meetings, it would appear this is more along the lines of yet another unit of local government that just does what it has always done with no regard to the law.
We would like to thank Terry Hutchcraft for the initial request for us to look into Rose Township. While we were unable to confirm the allegations made regarding the former highway commissioner’s private use of public property, the other things we confirmed should disturb most folks who care about their tax dollars.
