Dewitt Co. (ECWd)-
The former Wapella Township Road District Highway Commissioner who was charged with 23 felony counts has pled guilty to one Class 3 felony and is sentenced to 18 months’ probation for his criminal acts. We first covered Eldon Cusey and his $27,000.00 illegal use of the Township credit card in this article.
While we are pleased he was held accountable in some fashion, we are shocked that a person charged with 23 felony crimes in February now only faces probation. Not sure what message that sends to other public officials who have done similar things.
“Pursuant to agreement, Count I is dismissed as are Counts III through Count XXII. Deft. pleads guilty to Count II. Jumt of conviction entered. Deft. placed on probation for a period of 18 mos. Cert/conditions entered. FSO entered. Plea of guilty placed on file. Payment order entered. Cause set for FPR Sept. 6, 2023 at 1:30, A. Deft. ordered to report to probation dept. prior to leaving courthouse grounds. Deft. admonished with regard to right to appeal.” (Judici.com)
We find it interesting the judge who handled this case was the former Dewitt County State’s Attorney who did nothing after a probation officer was caught using the public credit card in clear violation of the law as covered in this article.
