Shelby County – Positive Progress

Shelby Co. (ECWd) –

The Shelby County Board voted a few months ago to establish their website which is now up and running.  The current board is the first in 20 years to actually act on the issue and get it done. They also voted to purchase the equipment necessary to videotape and live stream their meetings.

The first live-streamed meeting took place last night with the Legislative Committee.  You can view the meeting at this link.  Currently, the option to share the video on other platforms has been blocked including embedding the video on any other site.  We encourage them to change those settings.

These two transparency steps are huge in our eyes and we thank them for making this one of their priorities in a long list of things they are doing to address numerous matters in the County.

We have been providing live stream service of their county board meetings at no cost to the county for several years and look forward to them handling future live streaming of their meetings.

Should all Illinois governments be required to have a functioning and maintained website? Should all meetings be online (such as YouTube Channels, independent of cable access)?

No. Perhaps in some places there is a misconception regarding the size and importance of certain taxing bodies. There are many small governmental entities, especially townships, that have no need for a website, nor any need to have online meetings. Just another expense, another unneeded burden. Let’s get away from unnecessary governmental expenses which are really our (the taxpayer) expenses.
