Illinois (ECWd) –
Once again we find the Illinois Senate has pulled a bait and switch on legislation in the closing hours of their term.
House Bill 5471 was introduced as an Insurance Code and Public Adjusters bill back in January of 2022. Senate President Don Harmon filed an amendment late yesterday that guts and replaces the original bill.
Amend House Bill 5471 by replacing everything after the enacting clause with the following:
“Section 1. This Act may be referred to as the Protect Illinois Communities Act.
While the name of the bill indicates it would protect Illinois Communities, the truth is it does next to nothing to protect anyone as criminals who commit gun violence do not pay attention to any laws on the books.
A copy of the filed amendment can be downloaded at this link or viewed below. We understand there are going to be additional amendments to the filed version that will require the registration of certain firearms.
UDPATE – Another amendment has been made to the bill and it includes registrations of guns they define as assault weapons. A copy of that amendment can be downloaded at this link or viewed below the first amendment shown below.
