Springfield, IL. (ECWd) –
After we published the article on the allegation that an IDOT employee fired his personal firearm at work after a workplace prank on him by other IDOT workers (here), the Illinois Department of Transportation responded to our request for comment with the following statement:
Here’s our response to your inquiry:
The Illinois Department of Transportation is aware of the alleged incident. IDOT takes these allegations seriously, the matter was referred to ISP, and the employee who is alleged to have discharged the weapon is no longer employed with IDOT. IDOT is unable to comment any further on personnel matters.
Paul Wappel
Public Information Officer
Illinois Department of Transportation
We also understand the now-former employee of IDOT is also the elected commissioner of police and fire in the city of Benton, Illinois.
There is no indication on whether the employee was terminated or if he resigned.

. The Paris office fired him before he was indicted, and Six months later he was back on the job! Guilty by reason of insanity, Six months in the Champaign County Jail and he was back
to work!
