SPRINGFIELD, IL. (ECWd) –
On January 4, 2022, Springfield Mayor James Langfelder sent a letter to the Sangamon County Airport Authority after reading about the authority’s authorization of a lawsuit against the city related to airport fuel sales tax.
In the letter he mentions that they both agree the federal rule did not become effective until after December 2017.
He went on to further say the only person who can enforce the federal rule is the U.S. Secretary and that the national federal regulations involved do not allow for enforcement by local governments or private citizens.
The city calculated sales tax collected after the grace period as $48,000 and offered to use the money to hire a consultant to perform an analysis and provide a strategy to increase services and flights at the airport to benefit the citizens of Springfield and surrounding areas.
Langfelder ends with stating he believes the city is well positioned to defend against any lawsuit and requested a meeting with the airport authority to resolve the issue.
From this letter, it appears Langfelder has realized the city of Springfield withheld fuel sales tax from the airport.
According to the airport, they believe Langfelder is looking at the wrong type of tax in its calculations.

The fact that they haven’t indicates even if their contention is correct, it is not a cut and dried. IF they were turned down in this case, that is relevant information that should be made public. IF they haven’t tried to use this system, shame on them.
