By John Kraft & Kirk Allen

On February 3, 2021

Champaign, IL. (ECWd) –

USDOJ Press Release can be found (HERE),

Shamar Betts plead guilty to Count 1, Inciting a Riot, in the Federal Complaint and Indictment from his actions on May 31, 2020, in Champaign, Illinois.

According to the Complaint and Indictment:

  • Betts made by Facebook post “”I’m just the messenger We’re literally sitting on our ass watching the whole country and even others fight for our black rights Y’all think we don’t suffer through inequality here EVERYDAY We gotta put Champaign/Urbana on the map mfs gone hear and fear us too. SLIDE let’s get busy Justice for George FUCK12.”
  • This post was accompanied by a flyer advocating for a riot at Market Place Mall (located at 2000 N. Neil Street, Champaign, Champaign County, in the Central District of Illinois). The flyer (believed by us to be THIS one) further contained a meeting time of 3 p.m. and specific
instructions to “Bring friends & family, posters, bricks, bookbags etc.11 as well as a statement indicating “After the mall we hitting the whole PROSPECT & NEIL.” These words were overlaid on a stock image of a riot including a burning vehicle.
  • Officers of the Champaign Police Department responded to the area to observe the protest and respond to any acts of violence. At approximately 2:36 p.m., a group of approximately 50 to 75 people were reported gathering at the mall. The group
continued to grow in size. At approximately 3:12 p.m. the group began breaking out windows at businesses located in the mall and looting merchandise from within.
  • “Shamar Betts” posted a Facebook Live video during this time stating, “Look what a nigga just started .. .look what a nigga just started. We out here … we out here . .. we out here … we out here. All ya’ll talking that shit under my post … we out here. Fuck that I needs that. .. we out here. ” The user can also been seen carrying multiple items, to include numerous pairs of khaki pants with Old Navy tags on them. Although the user’s face cannot be seen on the video, at one point his left leg and foot are visible and he can been seen wearing blue jogger-style pants and black shoes identical to those depicted in a Facebook photograph posted by “Shamar Betts” on May 31, 2020 at 1:29 p.m.

Dozens of off-duty officers were called to the riot where there were multiple assaults of officers and intense confrontations with the police by the group. This activity continued throughout the night and into the early morning hours of June 1, 2020. By the end of the night, approximately 50 businesses in the area had been vandalized and / or looted, including multiple small businesses that were set to reopen on June 1, after being shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Further, Betts admitted that after the riot, he fled to Mississippi where he used his cell phone to conduct internet searches such as, “can police find your location by logging in messenger,” “can police track your facebook,” and “what are charges for starting a riot.”

Betts was arrested in Mississippi on June 5, 2020, by the U.S. Marshals Service Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force.

The Champaign Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Springfield Division, conducted the investigation in coordination with the Champaign County State’s Attorney’s Office. Supervisory Assistant U.S. Attorney Eugene L. Miller is representing the government in the prosecution.

For the offense of inciting a riot, the statutory penalty is up to five years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and three years of supervised release following imprisonment.

Sentencing will be on a future date, and Betts is still awaiting Hearings on his state charges in Champaign County.

I hope if the young man is put in jail he uses the time productively to further his education. And, yes, I tend to agree if white he may have gotten pass. Although, no one said life was fair. There are injustices done every day to & by white , black, asian, etc. I hope that one stupid mistake is just that and he learns from it.

In Chicago there are three shot and killed so far this week, plus 55 shot and killed for the entire month of January. So much for BLM. Is this clown protesting these crimes? The problem is YBM (young black men) killing other YBM. If Kim Foxx did her job, violent offenders would be in jail, not caught and released to offend again and again.

If a Black man were caught on camera killing an unarmed person, he would be arrested, prosecuted and incarcerated. That does not happen when cops murder unarmed Black men.

It is a fact, unarmed blacks are killed at a rate 3 times higher than other unarmed people. Those numbers come from the FBI from the reportings of the police departments nationwide. They are correct.

If this kid were white and rioting because he was supporting Trump, would you be giving him a free pass?

I’m drowned by your lame hypothetical. You posit like commenter “ANON” and seem to have poor understanding of the now popular idea of “systemic racism.”

The fact that Black unarmed men are killed at a rate 3 times as unarmed white men is not hypothetical.

Likewise, systematic racism is real but white men believe they are the most oppressed group in history despite all of the evidence. Sorry if you have been oppressed by not being allowed into Walmart for not wearing a mask to prevent an airborne virus.

I’m not arguing your statistics, merely asking how it is relevant? He did it, there is proof he did it, his race gender, and family origin are irrelevant.

If we want race not to matter in this country then let’s stop making race an issue when it has nothing to do with the facts

Blacks killing blacks where is your phony outrage for that?

for every black killed by a policeman of any race there are over 300 blacks killed by

other blacks. Chicago is a good example !

Today, I viewed Vice President Harris’s social media account to verify a statement she purportedly published on June 1, 2020, the day after Mr. Betts incited a riot in Champaign County, Illinois. However, the oldest published statement I could find on the then aspiring Senator Harris account is from October, 2020. Given her political aspirations and partisan politics, what role did the former California state prosecutor and acting US senator have in the civil unrest and violence occurring in the state of Illinois at the time?

Glad that the dumbass, mouthy, STUPID, racist, fool is (hopefully) going to get what he’s got coming to him. Run your mouth & start a riot = GO TO JAIL. However, I’m sure that the new “leaders” of the DOJ, as well as the radicals whispering in the ear of Joe Biden, will see to it that any “race-based sentencing inequity” will not befall what they will say is a poor, misguided, victim of discrimination,

In the 1950’s and 60’s, was Dragnet broadcast to prisons inmates? With an imperfect calm, this guy seems apt to realize the gain of Andy Dufrense friend Red long before any gray hair appears on his head.

Shawshank Prison inmate Redding’s resourcefulness, intellect, and in-kind self-reflection brought he a magnetic final answer to the parole hearing board.
