US DOJ Letters may prove problematic for numerous public officials across the Nation, Illinois included

Illinois Co. (ECWd) –

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) issued several letters today to officials across the nation pertaining to Grant Assurances, or should we say, apparent lack of compliance with grant assurances.

In Illinois, Chicago Superintendent of Police Eddie T. Johnson, Cook County Board of Commissioners President Toni Preckwinkle, and Executive Director Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority John Maki were the recipients of those letters.

Considering the report from Fox News back in August of 2017 raised the flag of concern when Governor Rauner signed the Illinois Trust Act into law, these grant assurance letters are not a surprise. For those not familiar with that new law, we urge you read it at the link provided.

From the letters:

“After reviewing your response, the Department remains concerned that your jurisdiction’s laws, policies, or practices may violate section 1373, or, at a minimum, that they may be interpreted or applied in a manner inconsistent with section 1373.”

We suspect the DOJ may want to send a similar letter to the following Illinois Public Official.

We suspect the very law he signed last year, specifically Section 15 of the Act, is going to prove problematic considering the language in the new Illinois law.   Specifically, Section 15, is a Prohibition on our law enforcement officials and agencies from enforcing federal civil immigration laws.

So much for the Oath of Office that is taken to uphold our Nation’s Constitution!  Kind of hard to do when we pass laws to prohibit such compliance.

Federal Grant Assurance compliance is nothing new to us as we have demanded accountability here locally with our Edgar County Airport Federal Grants.  After exposing numerous fraudulent grant filings with the FAA by some of our past public officials (past for a reason), the FAA froze funding until proper compliance was put in place.  Currently, there is a hold on additional funding due to non-compliance with Illinois law as it pertains to land zoning.

Any bets on who ends up losing this Grant Assurance battle with the DOJ?
