Shelbyville Township Violates Township Code – Holds illegal meeting

By Kirk Allen & John Kraft

On April 7, 2017

Shelby Co. (ECWd) –

One can only wonder why this Township can’t seem to get things right as once again, they have failed to either read the law or follow it.

What time can a Special Meeting be held in a Township?

“Special township meetings may not begin before 6 pm.”

As you can see, the law is not hard to understand but for some reason, this particular group chose to hold a special meeting March 9th and did so at 9 or 9:30 in the morning.  That constitutes a violation of the Township Code.

We will try to get more information on this matter as it relates to action taken at this meeting.   When the new board convenes in May, they could declare all action taken void as it was done in a meeting held outside the statutory mandated time frame.

If there is a violations of the Open Meetings Act all actions are null and void as it pertains to each single violation. Kind of reminds me of how the entire state is run – unlawfully.
