Wilmington, IL. (ECWd) –
The Wilmington Public Library Board of Trustees had one of its members convicted of possession of child porn back in 2010!!! This is incredible. So, according to this article, Maria Meachum was Library Director then and had to ask for the resignation of Michael Niles from the Board after he was convicted of child porn trafficking.
But, here in 2014 (just four years later), Maria Meachum is calling the Orland Park Public Library and telling them she admires the work the Orland Park Public Library has been doing (presumably their stance on refusing to filter out child pornography) and offers to give them the name of someone that can “help them” but does not want to leave the message on voice-mail “to protect the OPPL”.
Why on Earth would a library director who had dealings with a board member convicted of child porn possession be calling the OPPL and leaving messages saying she wants to help the OPPL against the public that has been scrutinizing the OPPL for mishandling of sex crimes? Is that what this call was about? If it wasn’t, what was the purpose of the cryptic message?

| Pam Monson EditorThe Wilmington Public Library District Board of Trustees will declare a vacancy when it meets next week, in the wake of confirmation that the board president was convicted and sentenced in Canada.Michael Niles, 67, of Wilmington, was sentenced to 18 months in prison on two counts of possession and importation of child pornography. He has been in custody since late last October.Niles is the president of the Board of Trustees of the Wilmington Public Library District. He has served the district since first elected in 1991. His current term expires in 2011.State law gives library boards little authority to remove non-performing members. The board can, however, declare a vacancy if a member is absent from all regular board meetings for a period of one year. Library director Maria Meachum said an 18-month sentence reasonably gives the board the expectation that its president would miss one-year’s worth of meetings.Meachum recently asked Niles for his resignation, although he may not yet have had the opportunity to respond.”We look forward to putting it all behind us and getting back to library business,” Meachum said. “… We are very happy to be able to make a motion to vacate the position at our next board meeting…”Continue reading… |

At the ALA’s Dec 17, 2013, training, where one OPPL employee trained people using homophobia, librarians were advised not to leave substantive messages on voice mail. It would be interesting if this call occurred after that meeting and was influenced by ALA. Wouldn’t that be remarkable if ALA was giving orders that local community employees were following to ensure the public remained uninformed about the very things they should be informed about?
