LONDON –
The owner of a Danish mink farm at the centre of a controversy over nearby wind turbines has reported more casualties among his animals.
Breitbart London reported on Tuesday that the turbines have been linked to a series of miscarriages and deformities among the mink, as well as increasingly aggressive behavior, but the farmer now says that things have got worse, with healthy pups having to be put down.
The farmer reports having to separate the mothers from their young after they became aggressive and started attacking them. This happened at the same time that the wind changed to the south, bringing the noise from the turbines directly over the farm.
He says: “The wind turned south yesterday, and the noise from the turbines came just over the farm, the females began to bite their puppies, just as I had expected.”

Posted at 21:51h, 21 JuneDear “Steve,”
I thought for sure you were going to say that these minks suffered from “nocebo” effects! I do not know of any mink farms within Illinois wind turbine projects, so there are none to compare these statements.
I abandoned my home because of wind turbine noise. I sure did not do it for fun or to prove a point or because I read about the hundreds of other families across the globe who went before me. We tried to remain in our home. I prayed at night that I would become accustomed to the noise, just like I became accustomed to living across an alley from the railroad right-of-way in Murphysboro for 3 years in college and afterwards. We abandoned our lovely property to protect the health of my wonderful wife and precious children during the time period it is taking to resolve the loss of our ability to sleep or use our home for its intended purposes. Even my physician recommended that we get away from the wind turbines.
Minks may be the new “canary in the mine” regarding wind turbine noise, sleep deprivation, and cortisol levels. (Many wind victims have looked to cortisol levels to see if there is a connection for their cardiac/stress problems which are linked to lack of quality sleep.) Look at this PubMed U.S. National Library of Science publication which discusses minks and stress:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21438775
Is there a good possibility there is a connection between cortisol, sleep, stress, minks, humans, sleeplessness, wind turbines?
By the way, our dog is miserable, too. He and I are not scientists, he can’t read “crazy internet stuff,” but he and I both have changed a lot since our family home is not the calm peaceful place it once was before the time when turbines began pumping out electricity. The low frequency noise was such that it simply kept us from getting restful sleep. The increase in health problems and stress increased a small amount each day. For those most susceptible/vulnerable (children and women), the impact to sleep happens quickly, but for others, it takes more time for the effects to set in. For us, it was a dose response. A little radioactivity from a dental X-ray is allowable for a patient, but the dentist’s staff stand behind a lead-lined wall when they push the button. Living full time near the InvEnergy wind turbines was hard on my kids, my wife, my kids, and my marriage. As a father and husband, there was no healthier solution than to move ourselves.
Are you a scientist, physician, or a veterinarian? Do you live near the wind turbine? Do you own livestock or have other pets in the midst of the project? If so, I would like to acknowledge some credit. If not, I do not believe you really know what you are talking about. It is definitely true that wind turbine noise does not affect every person and every home the same, but it is also true that the Vermilion County turbines are a size or two larger and/or taller than all other Illinois wind projects, and we are not the first family to abandon our home once a machine of this size was put into operation. We get to be the first Illinoisans to experience what happens when a 495′ tall wind turbine is placed nearby. Being part of this experiment has been very bad for my family. I hope it does not happen to other families. It is a hard decision to take action to fix our problem first or let our problem skid while trying to keep it from spreading to others.
Remember how is used to be “cool and glamorous” to smoke cigarettes? Are you old enough to remember filling your car with leaded gasoline and slathering on lead-based paint? Asbestos abatement is a pretty expensive fix for many of our public facilities. Years later, we have bigger setbacks from secondhand smoke which used to be inside most buildings and now it is a law for smokers to remain 15′ from the entrance. It is a known fact that children suffered brain damage from lead poisoning. Wind turbines are the next lead paint, cigarette smoke, asbestos, and radioactivity exposure health debacles of the upcoming years.
Let’s put our full names, addresses, who you work for, job title, etc on the end of our next messages so we can revisit all these posts in a few years. Let’s see which of us becomes the one on the right side of reality. It is only a matter of time for the repercussions to evolve, and it is not too late to rethink your ways so that others are not hurt from poor decision making. Let’s remain open minded to all of the possibilities of the unintended consequences. I will go on the record with my name and good reputation at stake from now until the end. Will you?
Sincerely,
Ted Hartke
Steve
Posted at 05:26h, 15 JuneCorrelation is not causation. No reports of mothers eating their young near the many wind turbines in Illinois. As long as Breitbart is dealing in anecdotes and not science, I have personally observed farm animals very near wind turbines in Illinois and they don’t seem distressed to me. Breitbart cites one “academic study,” which turns out to be some academics presenting a paper at a conference, said paper citing the same academics as references. There is no mention of peer-reviewed scientific literature. As one of the Breitbart commenters suggested, these disorders may be due to dietary deficiencies. Will look forward to the science on this.
