Shelbyville, IL…The Shelby County Board today approved a measure to reform how time sheets for County employees are handled, according to Shelby County Treasurer Erica Firnhaber, a proponent of the measure.

“When I took office, I discovered that because of how time sheets were being processed, employees were being paid for time that they had not actually worked yet,” Firnhaber said. “This is a big problem when you have people quit their jobs or are suspended or terminated. Standard practice is to pay employees in arrears. This is especially true for government bodies which are accountable to taxpayers for how money is allocated.”

The measure the Board passed takes effect immediately. Beginning Sunday, May 17th, employees will be required to turn in biweekly time sheets. Their pay will be based on the time turned in at the end of the pay period. Their biweekly checks will reflect the hours they worked during the pay period and they will no longer be paid for hours not covered in the pay period.

“Employees are going to get paid for every hour they work, and they are going to be paid in a timely fashion,” Firnhaber said. “All we are doing is exercising some fiscal responsibility and making sure that we are more accountable with taxpayer dollars. Government bodies should not be paying people for work that has not yet been completed. I thank the members of the County Board for stepping up and approving these important reforms.”
