Algonquin Township – Governor’s signature could change Trustee’s appointment plan.

McHenry Co. (ECWd) –

The Algonquin Township Supervisor was recently hospitalized with a medical condition.  Due to his illness and absence, the Trustees had included on a recent agenda the appointment of an interim Supervisor even though they were unclear as to the actual ability of the current Supervisor Chuck Lutzow to perform these duties.     After this article, the board tabled the appointment until the next regular meeting, which is this week.

A recent bill that is awaiting the Governor’s signature is HB 3141.  That bill was introduced by State Representative Brand Halbrook not once but twice.  The first time was several years ago after issues with a vacancy in the position of Supervisor for Shelbyville Township.  His first attempt failed in the Senate.   During his second effort, another Supervisor vacancy in DuPage Township brought attention to the problem and the bill passed both houses with a unanimous vote.

The legislation, currently awaiting the Governor’s signature, requires a trustee to be appointed to the position of Deputy Supervisor during such a temporary vacancy.  Current law forbids such an appointment without the trustee first resigning their trustee position.

“a trustee shall be appointed as deputy supervisor to perform the ministerial functions of that office until the vacancy is filled under subsections (a) and (b).”

With legislation pending the Governor’s signature we wonder if the Algonquin Township Trustees will move forward with an appointment of their choosing or will they wait for the Governor’s signature and then appoint a trustee.
