Petition Objections filed against 6 Candidates for Atlanta Public Library District Trustee –

By John Kraft & Kirk Allen

On December 22, 2018

ATLANTA, IL,. (ECWd) –

Earlier this afternoon, Objections to the nomination packets of six candidates for the positions of Atlanta Public Library District were filed at the Library District prior to its closing for the day.

The Objector is George Menken, a resident, taxpayer, and candidate of the Library District and he is desirous of seeing to it that the laws governing the filing of nomination petitions are properly complied with, and that only qualified candidates have their names appear on the ballot as candidates for the office they seek.

Candidates Julie Tabor, Randy Brooks, James Welchel, Robert Letterly, Karen Horn, and Marjory Dyer, according to the Objections, are ineligible to be placed on the ballot for Trustee of the Library District as follows:

  • Julie Tabor has withdrawn her candidacy (here).
  • Randy Brooks, according to the Objection, failed to file a receipt with his nomination packet evidencing of his filing of a Statement of Economic Interest with the Logan County Clerk. This is mandatory under the election code and failure to file the receipt with the Library District (in this case) will invalidate his petitions.
  • James Welchel, according to the Objection, did not number his petition pages, did not date his statement of economic interest, and did not file a receipt with his nomination packet evidencing of his filing of a Statement of Economic Interest with the Logan County Clerk.
  • Robert Letterly, according to the Objection, did not file a receipt with his nomination packet evidencing of his filing of a Statement of Economic Interest with the Logan County Clerk.
  • Karen Horn, according to the Objection, did not file a receipt with her nomination packet evidencing of her filing of a Statement of Economic Interest with the Logan County Clerk.
  • Marjory Dyer, according to the Objection, did not file a receipt with her nomination packet evidencing of her filing of a Statement of Economic Interest with the Logan County Clerk.

The Atlanta Public Library District must now convene an electoral board in order to hear the Objections. Any Objection Hearings are public meetings and must be posted at least 48 hours in advance in advance of the meeting.

Wow. If they can’t read the instructions and requirements to file nomination packets do you really want them running a public body like the Atlanta Public Library District.
