Mt. Pulaski Mayor James Cole resigns – Stipulates no legal action to be taken against him?

By Kirk Allen & John Kraft

On April 10, 2018

Logan Co. (ECWd) –

After our attendance at the last Mt. Pulaski board meeting the city attorney resigned the following morning.  During that meeting, we shared our concerns with the actions of the Mayor which may well constitute felony crimes.  We asked him to resign, as did other board members.  The article on those events that includes the video of the meeting can be viewed at this link.

We were told this weekend the Mayor has turned in his “stipulated” resignation letter and let’s just say this is a letter like none other we have seen from a public official.

“With the allegations being made toward me, although I don’t agree, for the best interest of the City
Government to conduct the public’s business I tender my resignation to take effect immediately with
the following stipulation, no legal action on the allegations being leveled at me.”

Yes, he will resign, provided there is no legal action on the allegations being leveled at him.

Seriously?

If this is not an indicator that a criminal investigation is justified I don’t know what is.  The evidence we exposed just after one meeting is overwhelming but we understand, this is Illinois.

We suggest this board pay no attention to this stipulation and take immediate action of filing a criminal complaint with the local law enforcement agencies and their County State’s Attorney.

If we continue to allow people to get away with violating our laws by simply resigning the public trust will continue to erode and that leads to even less accountability.

We thank those board members who had the courage to call out this Mayor during their public meeting and want them to know, we are willing to help in any way we can for them to see justice in this matter. The taxpayers deserve accountability.

I think his “conditional” resignation is hilarious. I think the board should reject his resignation and the citizens start filing claims and begin legal proceedings against this mayor.

Just like a convict dictating his terms of incarceration. So sick of politicians and people in power just getting to say “I don’t agree but…” I’ll take one for the team or they think am “I’m sorry” is enough and I get to keep my pension or golden parachute. I want them to plead for me if I ever break a law or get arrested. That ought to keep the cuffs off.

He’s calling “chex”? Really? That game was overused in kindergarten. Throw him in the slammer!

don’t need my wit when his is the wittiest on this posting. However, I do wonder who advised him and if he thinks the Board can give away the legal rights of the constituents they represent. It has become their duty to refer the matter to the State’s Atty. Just censure him, let him stay on the Board and instruct Police to remove him when he has his meltdown and ban him permanently.

From the internets: “I’ve added this stipulation to my living will: If I am ever on life support unplug me. Then plug me back in. See if that works.”
