Coles County Board- Admission to violation of law- Finally!

By Kirk Allen & John Kraft

On October 11, 2017

Coles Co. (ECWd) –

The Coles County Board is currently wrapped up in a Federal legal case over tax assessment issues, of which we contend could have been prevented had they simply done the right thing once exposed to the violations of law that took place in this article.

During last night’s County Board meeting, James Dinaso, a local business owner and Charleston resident, once again took to the podium and asked if anyone was willing to ever admit when they are wrong and fix it.  Initially met with silence on that topic, a back and forth began with board member Cory Sanders and at one point the State’s Attorney chimed in and made an admission that we had never heard to date.

Mr. Bower admitted that they had all agreed (County Board) that the font size used in the publication for the assessments was not in compliance with the law.  I had to do a double take and ask them to repeat what they said.  They did, in fact, confirm the font size used was not compliant with the law and apparently, that fact had been discussed and agreed on during previous committee meetings, which few members of the public attend. The fact it was never shared with the public was of interest as this was the first time, as it relates to the property tax assessment issue, that they have admitted any fault or violation of law.

Fixing broken government takes baby steps and I think last night one big baby step was taken!

dinteresting – Just a fyi – the last sentence in the 3rd paragraph didn’t get finished, but started in the 4th paragraph & got finished – not a big deal, but thought you may want to edit it.
