Winnebago County Purchasing Director Sally Claassen Sentenced to Two Years in Federal Prison for Stealing More Than $400,000

By Kirk Allen & John Kraft

On September 17, 2016

Winnebago County – (ECWd) –

According to the FBI press release, “Claassen used her position as the approved for payments from Winnebago County to vendors to steal approximately $368,137 from the County.  Claassen further admitted in the plea agreement that from April 15, 2014 to July 1, 2015, she used her Winnebago County-issued credit card and checks from Winnebago County to purchase items for her personal use, including home remodeling items and personal vacations. “

The parallels to Edgar County’s East Central Illinois Mass Transit District (“ECIMTD”) findings from several years ago are stunning, yet to date, no one has been charged although we continue to hear the Federal authorities are going to prosecute the Edgar County matter.

How is it that we continue to see Federal prosecutions in the Northern District and nothing in the Central?  It’s not as if they don’t have the evidence of crimes being committed.

I answer your “why?” with this: government employees are known for corruption and for not doing their jobs, being lazy, rude, incompetent-in this column you furnish examples of both. The people’s perception of government theft of taxpayer money based on their performance, which has been well grounded in fact. Consider this tidbit-why is it necessary to hire an attorney to obtain an accurate real estate tax bill? Is it an inaccurate bill because of theft, incompetence,or corruption? Curiously, I do not hire an attorney for an accurate Discover Card invoice. Or any other bill. Do you?

Is Scott Christiansen going to jail? Or should I ask when is he going?
